Not so long ago, or to be more precise on March 14, 2019, in Los Angeles, Tesla presented a new model and a new Tesla Model Y crossover.
What are we prepared Elon Musk ( Elon Musk ) and what is known about the new product?
On the one hand, this is a large-scale Tesla project, on the other hand, a conservative update or, as they say, UpGrade of the Tesla Model 3 model, since Model Y is 75% Model 3 components. Elon Musk himself believes that Tesla Model Y will be the most affordable and a car sold in the US from Tesla.
The show passed, the presentation took place, but, perhaps, there were even more questions both to the car itself and to the founder of Tesla .
And the first question of them: “And what actually the opponent of Artificial Intelligence Elon Musk ” stuffed “(in the good sense of the word) into the stuffing of his new car?”
After all, according to Ilona’s statement, Artificial Intelligence is a fundamental threat to humanity, which already needs to be taken under control.
“I believe that artificial intelligence will sooner or later finish off all of us,” said Elon Musk .
I cannot help but add: “And authority was given to him over every tribe and people, and language, and nation. And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world “(Bible. According to Musk, the main danger lies in the fact that scientists are creating intelligent technology that is capable of self-improvement without human participation and make fateful decisions for him.
As a result, my second and subsequent questions rained down on their own: “Does Tesla use Artificial Intelligence in its cars? What are its capabilities? Is it generally in Tesla cars , given the position of Elon Musk? “
I want to give answers to these and other questions in this article.
First, let’s look at the position of Elon Musk himself.
Not so long ago, chief executive officer of the Tesla ( CEO of ), as well as the founder of SpaceX and Neuralink Elon Musk said: “I think that artificial intelligence will sooner or later kill us all!”
“ Facebook , Google , Amazon , Apple – they all already know a lot about you. The artificial intelligence that will be created in the bowels of these corporations will gain tremendous power over people. And the concentration of power in one hand always generates huge risks. Only a few people at Google control the creation of Artificial Intelligence, without any external oversight – it doesn’t have to be that way. ” – said Elon Musk .
As we say, less than a year has passed and in 2018 it became known that Elon Musk is working on the creation of his own equipment (AI hardware ) that implements Artificial Intelligence (AI). The information, at first glance, seems strange against the background of his statement: “Artificial Intelligence is a fundamental threat to the existence of mankind.”
Interesting is the fact that Elon Musk is one of the board members and investors of a very unusual research organization OpenAI . The main mission of which is to work on the problems of creating the so-called Basic (General) Artificial Intelligence ( artificial general of Intelligence , the AGI) or highly autonomous systems that are superior to people in their capabilities, but nevertheless to be safe and bring tangible benefits to people …
In 2019, OpenAI developed and launched its Artificial Intelligence, which was called GPT 2. A feature of this system is that it is able to write not just sentences, but entire novels, maintain a discussion with people, and completely replace entire news agencies. and is also capable of shaping and managing public opinion. But, to date, the OpenAI GPT 2 project has been practically classified.
In addition to this OpenAI develops supercomputers of new computing technologies, robotics and artificial intelligence technology ( A rtificial I of ntelligence , the AI), organized in three main areas:
- Capabilities. Development of capabilities and technologies of artificial intelligence systems.
- Safety. Ensuring AI and AGI systems align with human values.
- Politics. Ensuring proper management of AI and AGI systems, creating a global community working on solving global problems of AI and AGI, developing standards.
The views of the team working at OpenAI are so broad that it becomes obvious that in the near future, OpenAI’s approaches to organizing its activities are quite capable of transforming today’s economic reality. The so-called “digital economy” and “digital transformation” for OpenAI are no longer the future, but the present, as exemplified by their division, OpenAI LP, which is a hybrid of a commercial and non-profit organization.
And what is very important, OpenAI in its work strives to create so-called “new value systems” for people, and this in turn is an indisputable fact of the beginning of the transformation of our world under the influence of technologies of the fourth industrial revolution.
And so, let’s first interim result – despite all the contradictions, internal struggles and serious concerns Elon Max not only refused to AI ideas, but also finances the organization OpenAI , which is developing a controlled and secure Basic Artificial Intelligence ( artificial general of Intelligence , the AGI ), in order to minimize any risks associated with AI for humanity. In addition, he himself is actively working on creating his own AI, and for this he plans to leave the OpenAI board , but remain an investor in this organization.
Now let’s move on to Tesla Artificial Intelligence .
For 2018, little was known about Tesla Artificial Intelligence , but the fact is that Artificial Intelligence is already in Tesla cars . And this is very important!
According to some sources, he developed a system of autopilot cars Tesla and works on so-called “thinking” algorithms ( ” thinking ” algorithms ), which allows cars to go from the second to the fifth level of autonomy in 2019.
To date, work on the creation of Tesla Artificial Intelligence is going on together with equipment manufacturer NVIDIA and is based on a model of “unsupervised” or “unsupervised” machine learning algorithms – ” unsupervised learning model “, in simple terms , is one of the processing methods , analysis and presentation of information by Artificial Intelligence.
An interesting fact is that it turns out that Tesla cars , produced since 2014, already had the ability to drive autonomously. Over the past five years, Tesla has been collecting Big Data from automotive systems, sensors, and drivers and is a leader in their analysis. It is big data (large arrays of structured and unstructured information) that are “food” for any Artificial Intelligence.
Does this mean that work on Tesla’s Artificial Intelligence began long before 2014 and, possibly, long before the release of the first Tesla Roadster in 2006?
Everything is possible. NVIDIA’s official website says:
« The Tesla Motors and NVIDIA are collaborating with the early days of the development of the S Innovation Model . All Tesla vehicles, including the Model S, Model X and the upcoming Model 3, will be equipped with an on-board supercomputer that will enable fully autonomous driving.
It has 40 times the processing power of the previous generation and uses a deep neural network developed at Tesla to process data from multiple sensors and cameras.
This onboard supercomputer is based on the NVIDIA DRIVE PX AI computing platform. It is a complete computing system that uses innovative deep learning techniques to assess the situation around the vehicle. “
On its Facebook page, Nvidia states that “Unlike the conventional approach to self-driving cars, we have not programmed any explicit components to detect, map, plan or control this vehicle. Instead, the car learns on its own to create all the necessary internal representations needed to drive, simply by observing the human drivers. “
In 2015, NVIDIA announced its first standalone chips based on the Maxwell GPU microarchitecture for the NVIDIA DRIVE system (autonomous vehicle and driver assistance system enhanced by machine learning). Already in 2016, NVIDIA introduced the Drive PX 2 system.
Thus, the picture with the advent of Tesla Artificial Intelligence begins to be drawn more clearly. The Tesla Model S was first introduced to a wider audience in 2009. Obviously, the first ideas for developing Tesla AI appeared long before 2009, but their practical implementation still began in 2015 with the creation of the NVIDIA DRIVE hardware system.
As we can see, the news of 2018 and 2019 about the creation of hardware artificial intelligence from Elon Musk is a little late. With a certain degree of probability, Musk and his teams, companies, organizations and partners have been working on this task for a long time, and it is likely that in the coming years we will all have a major breakthrough in the automotive industry and in the development of Artificial Intelligence.
It is also worth noting that hundreds of companies around the world are currently engaged in similar tasks, but not many have yet managed to get close to Tesla .
For example, the Chinese IT giant Baidu started developing specialized processors for Artificial Intelligence back in 2011 and only in 2018 presented their new generation to the general public. Baidu’s AI arsenal includes image, voice and face recognition, natural language processing and autonomous driving.
In 2017, Baidu launched Apollo 2.0, an open collaborative software platform, to accelerate the development of self-driving cars.
In 2019, as a result of active work, Baidu is launching self-driving taxis on the streets of Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. Changsha is slated to become an autonomous driving city in the coming years.
What awaits you and me in the automotive market in the near term for the development of technologies of the fourth industrial revolution?
It seems to me that the near future of Tesla in the creation and development of Artificial Intelligence for its cars is that all cars of the company will have their own autonomous artificial intelligence and function in a kind of their own network and their own information space. More precisely, Tesla cars will be able to work and learn (develop) off – line and on – line . In the case when cars will be connected to the Internet or any other data transmission network, they will be able to exchange experience with each other.
Cars will be able to independently work with various information systems, including navigation systems, in other words, maps, filling them with information about the traffic situation, the speed of movement on sections, traffic jams and accidents, etc. Data from all cars (as we said, Big Data ) will be flocked to the cloud storage of the company’s distributed data center, which will enable all Tesla vehicles to automatically self-learn using this data. Self-learning of cars, in turn, will allow you to interact with the driver in such a way as to make the driving process as comfortable and safe as possible in any situation.
The ability of cars to exchange data with the center in the near future will allow them to exchange data and interact directly with each other, thereby forming local information networks from cars, for example, within a district or city, or region, or maybe an entire country. This will allow them to speed up the learning process several times, as well as to predict and possibly prevent adverse road situations, accidents and consequences from them. In addition, this will allow solving many problems and problems in the economy and, in particular, in transport logistics for large freight carriers.
With the expansion of Tesla’s autonomous car fleet and the general data exchange network, vehicles from other manufacturers will also be connected to these networks. Perhaps, at this moment, when the globalization of such a network occurs, we will be fully able to appreciate all the advantages of the concept of the development of the “Internet of Things”. Scientists predict that by 2020, 50 billion devices will be connected to the Internet from smartphones, microwaves and refrigerators to homes and cities. Let’s add hundreds of millions of AI-driven autonomous vehicles to this network! And we get “Internet of Things 2.0”.
Imagine what the level of technologies of the fourth industrial revolution will be, including robotization, mechanical engineering and other industries by 2030? The production and operation of transport goes to full autonomy and control of Artificial Intelligence. The future is changing now, but it is important to understand that the role of a person in this future is only increasing.
The process of creating and developing Artificial Intelligence will go by leaps and bounds and will largely depend on how soon the information networks of automakers will be integrated into the systems of the so-called “Safe Cities”, in fact, forming a new concept of the “Digital Economy” and “Cities of the Poor”.
“We will soon be taking self-driving cars for granted. I think this is an almost settled issue. We know what to do and we will achieve our goal in just a few years, ”said Elon Max back in 2015.
